Brooklyn Home Foreclosures spread to Sunset Park

Sunset Park is mentioned in this piece that appeared in the International Business Times

Meghan Faux, head of the Foreclosure Prevention Project of South Brooklyn Legal Services, said that Brooklyn home foreclosures have spread into Sunset Park and in other neighborhoods where no resident was distressed in the past. She added that the major foreclosure factor was still toxic mortgage underwriting, although the high unemployment rate has been forcing newer batches of homeowners to default.

With 25% of the national mortgage market under water, it was only a matter of time before we got hit. As it appears that the economy will not get any better any time soon and with the city raising real estate taxes to boot even though our house valuations have gone down the rising tax evaluations means we will be paying more, not less in real estate taxes. The city Government never shrinks as long as sucker taxpayers are around and we elect politicians who only see government as an employment agency for their cronies and supporters.

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle does Cop Out

Bruce Willis holds an umbrella in Bay Ridge last year during the filming of Cop Out.
Eagle photo by Georgine Benvenuto

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle did a review of COP OUT the film that was filmed here in Bay Ridge (mostly in Bay Ridge), Sunset Park and Park Slope. For people in the nabe watching the film will also give them an opportunity to see scenes of the are play as background and will be recognizable to many. Don't be a cheapskate, don't wait for it to come out on DVD or blueray, get your butts to a movie theater right now.

The New York Times also did a review of the film, but barely mentions it was filmed in Brooklyn, much less the nabe. Spumoni Gardens in Bay Ridge gets a mention in the review.

Village Voice Review of New Belachan

I had somehow missed the following review recently of our New Belachan Restaurant. I am posting it here to give some exposure. New Belachan is set too move soon from it's location on 7th avenue to 8th avenue between 59th and 60th streets. I happen to like their Bat Thai but I can tell you the rest of their menu is worth savoring as well. Their new location will also be a bit larger than their current quarters. I am sure it will bring them increased business as well.

At the park Celebrations bring in the new Chinese Lunar Year

I went to see how the celebrations that were sponsored by the parks department and some of our local politicians such as Felix Ortiz. The first thing I noticed was that they held the event inside the gymnasium at the Sunset Park recreation center. The space was woefully small for the number of people that actually showed up. They should have held the event outside rather than indoors. The only people who got a decent view of what was going on were the people in the first row at the ropes that had been used to cordon off a substantial portion of the center of the gymnasium. All in all it was a rather tepid show compared to the one next day on Sunday. It was nevertheless a colorful display of Chinese music dancing and arts and included the necessary display of Lion Dancing. I hope that barring bad weather when they hold the event next year it will be held outside rather than indoors which roved to be totally inadequate to the event.

Year of the Tiger Roars in on 8th Avenue

I did not make the celebrations on time this past Sunday for the festivities as I always do. It's usually a lot of boring speeches by politicians anyway. I got there kind of late after the march up the avenue was over. Nevertheless, I did get some great shots of the aftermath where lion dancers and Taoist priests visit the local stores and drive out "evil spirits". I did manage however to get a few interesting shots of the post ceremony celebrations. I hope to get luckier at next year's event.

Cop Out The movie is coming out on February 26

The ads are already out for COP OUT the movie which was shot in and around Bay Ridge (mostly in Bay Ridge), Sunset Park and Park Slope. The movie was originally tentatively titled "A Couple of Dicks" but I suppose the connotations of the title made them change it. The movie starting Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan made a splash during filming up in Bay Ridge as Third Avenue was blocked for a couple of days while they were filming outdoor scenes.
Some of the scenes for the movie were shot inside our very own (located in the mall in our website). Piramide Reastaurant which is in Park Slope just over the border. It should be interesting to see which scenes of our nabes we will recognize when we see the movie. I will certainly recognize Piramide since I shot the interior for the website. The letter below is from the producers of the movie to the owners.

The owner of Piramide Restaurant Geraldine Viggiano and actress Ana de la Reguera who also starred in the film.
