Baba's Deli is located right over the border from the Greenwood Heights section of Sunset Park in Park Slope on 5th Avenue and Prospect Avenue. The store was started 25 years ago by Stephen the owner who is an immigrant from Guyana. The original name was Baba's Indo/Pak West Indian Grocery. As the neighborhood changed it went through several makeovers becoming Baba's Convenience Store in 1974 and as the neighborhood underwent a wave of gentrification it materialized to it's current version Baba's Deli and Coffee shop 9 years ago. It's one of those immigrant success stories that hear quite often in New York City. He started the business borrowing money from his mother in-law whose nickname is Baba, hence the name of the store. Stephen also has a degree in architecture and also runs a small construction company and owns EZ Laundromat on 4th Avenue and 14th street. He has been on our website for some years now and just added a new Menu to his Deli. Yes he delivers check out his Menu and give him a call if he's within delivery distance.

Store of the Day: Dragon Bay Bakery
One thing that 8th avenue has a lot of is chinese style coffee shops. In many ways I think they are superior to Starbucks. However, they don't have the much needed wifi that some of us crave. These places are fast moving and it's a get in have your coffee and get out kind of place. Dragon Bay is a a chain and has at least four of these places along 8th Avenue. I am not familiar if they have any others in other chinatowns. They do have some pastries that beat anything Starbucks carries by a mile. My favorites are French Toast, the fillet of Chicken and cream coconut bread. Their coffee is not bad either. This one is located on 8th and 58th. The tables are stainless steel, but if you're thinking of hanging out there while sipping a coffee, this isn't the place. Drop in and give them a try anyway, you may like some of their stuff.

BABA'S DELI a hybrid delight with a coffee shop too
Baba's Deli located just over the border in Park Slope has joined our roster of eateries in our website mall. What makes Baba's rather interesting is that hidden in the back is a patio with chairs and tables giving it a relaxed air as you sip your coffee and perhaps read a paper or cruise the web on your netbook. Baba's joins a number of other rather eclectic hybrid coffee shops opening in our area and creeping up towards the direction of Sunset Park proper. The owner has told us that he intends to install WIFI in the very near future to service his clients and patrons. With the lack of any Starbucks and Mc Donalds recent introduction of free WIFI more places like this are needed in the neighborhood. So if you happen to be in the are, drop in and say hello and tell them you saw them on this blog and on our website. Remember, only your patronage can keep our local businesses open and competitive in this economy.
