New Restaurant Of The Day: Gran Villa Restaurant

A new restaurant has opened on third Avenue and 40th street at a location that was formerly a Glat Kosher takeout place. Located across the street from the iconic Frankel's boot and shoe store, Gran Villa restaurant offers a menu of traditional Salvadorean food as well as some standard Italian and American dishes. The location was renovated and the interior is brand new. Openings: Sunset Fried Chicken & Grill

A new eatery has opened on the corner of 45th street and 5th Avenue. Featuring all kinds of regular fare as well as Mideastern Kebab and Gyro on their menu. It is part of the expansion of Arab owned businesses on the Avenue who have joined the Chinese spillover from 8th Avenue onto 5th. The signs are very similar to what you would find at a Kennedy's chicken place. Arab owned stores have been slowly making their way northward along 5th Avenue from Bay Ridge and bringing some of their cuisine with them. Part of the changes that one observes as 5th Avenue opens it's doors to new kinds of businesses serving our community.

Eatery Of The Day: Spartan Souvlaki Greek Food

Nestled in the southern end past the Sunset Park border in Dyker Heights on 8th Avenue and 68th Street is one of the best Greek restaurants in our area. A friend of mine once told me that if you wanted to know where the best food was in a neighborhood you watched where the local cops ate. The restaurant is of course run by a Spartan family. I am not quite sure if they number 300. Every Saturday weather permitting they have a tradition of roasting a couple of whole pigs out in the front. Openings: Pho And Banhmi Inc. Vietnamese sandwitches

A new eatery has popped up on 63rd street and 8th Avenue catering for the Chinese fast food market. The place was doing brisk business on it's opening day which is a good sign that it will survive. Another addition to the culinary variety that has been a hallmark of Sunset Park's destination for ethnic cuisine.

Sunset Park Pizzeria does a deal (2 slices and soda $4)

M & F Pizzeria in Sunset Park is doing a special to drum up business at 2 slices and a can of soda for $4. I don't know how long the deal will last. The slices are not bad at all. Considering how inflation is eating away at the value of our  dollars it's not a bad deal at all. I also discovered that they deliver and also do curbside delivery as well. They will deliver even into Bay Ridge up to 75th street and into Park Slope. Visit their new webpage on our mall here.

From the Guardian.UK archives comes this little gem. I  was looking at the traffic on our main website and noticed that I was getting quite a few from here. One of our very own Sunset Park Restaurants Pacificana makes the list. I'll be looking at other links on the list to see if we get hits from other interesting websites.

Store closings ( La Sultana Restaurant )

I am sorry to have to report the closing of La Sultana Restaurant on the corner of 41st street and 8th Avenue. It fell victim to the changing demographics of the neighborhood and a greedy landlord who demanded double the rent. What usually happens when a building changes hands and the new owner sees a bonanza rather than a long term opportunity. The food was great but the neighborhood is changing as more Chinese appear at this end of 8th Avenue and have a taste for a different cuisine. Not to worry though. It will soonn open again at a new location in a more Spanish part of the neighborhood. I will keep you posted..
