Where To Eat While Watching The Marathon In Sunset Park, Bay Ridge and Park Slope

 

If you're going to stroll to fourth avenue to watch the marathon as it runs through Sunset Park tomorrow from miles 4 to 6 you might want to take a look at a nifty guide that the newspaper AM New York published on their website. The guide includes our very own Mug Cafe at the Mile 4 marker. I highly recommend Mug Cafe and if you go there tell them you heard about them from the blog. They don't just have coffee. There is a full fledged pizzeria in the back and you can get bagels and other dishes besides pasta and pizza. Enjoy..

Shake Shack Arrives to the PASUBA Corridor

The Brooklyn Eagle has an article on the new Shake Shack that recently opened near the Barclay's Center complete with a smorgasbord of photos of the place. (For those wondering because you never heard the term, PASUBA stands for Park Slope, Sunset Park, Bay  Ridge.) What is striking is the similarity of the fries and menu to an old fashioned Nathan's in a more upscale setting. The only thing that differentiates it, is the decor and ambiance to justify the higher prices.  Other than that, it's just another fast food joint selling burgers and fries. If your thinking of making the trek up north from Sunset Park to check the place out, then maybe the photos in the article may entice you to give them a visit.

New Restaurant Of The Day: Gran Villa Restaurant

A new restaurant has opened on third Avenue and 40th street at a location that was formerly a Glat Kosher takeout place. Located across the street from the iconic Frankel's boot and shoe store, Gran Villa restaurant offers a menu of traditional Salvadorean food as well as some standard Italian and American dishes. The location was renovated and the interior is brand new. The food is very good, so if you are anywhere near there I urge you to try out their food., Check out their page at our main website and look at their menu. Oh, and did I mention they deliver? Anywhere in Sunset Park...

More Gentrification: Sunset Park and the Burgeoning Industry City Food Hall

As if we needed more proof of the accelerating gentrification of the neighborhood comes this piece from the blog Fashion Whirled. From the article; "A quick ride on the N express takes you to the 36th Street stop, where you walk west to the water. Trust me, this will be the next new “Chelsea Market” of hipsterville (Chelsea market developers own 50% of this venture). Already anchoring the retail fashion, food and art scene are the Nets, Blue Marble Ice Cream, Steve & Andy’s Organics Modern Primitive Café, Ninja Bubble Tea, Colson Patisserie. Slated are The Fashion Chef, Ruby Beets’ vintage furniture and Liddabit Sweets."

What it all boils down to is that the changes in the neighborhood are accelerating at a fast pace to the degree that in a couple of years we won't even recognize the waterfront area of the neighborhood. We all knew this was going to happen with all the plans on the drawing boards to completely redo the waterfront part for some time now. 99 Favor Taste Restaurant, Hot Pot and More

Nestled in the middle  of the street on 61st street between 8th and 7th avenues is the relatively new Hot Spot where the locals have found a new food hangout. 99 Favor Taste opened it's doors in April 2012 but  because of it's location I had no clue they were there until I stumbled upon it. The  place offers traditional Chinese Hot Pot cuisine which has been evolving into Asian fusion Hot Pot a soup broth based cuisine and form of eating which originated in China thousands of years ago. The interior of the place is decked out a bit more upscale than most of the restaurants in the neighborhood and makes for a very pleasant eating environment to enjoy food. Besides Hot Pot they also serve what was described to me as Korean fusion BBQ. I haven't been able to find reviews of the place as yet in New York Magazine's website or the Village Voice. Their radar hasn't picked it up as yet. In my recently frequent visits the place is always crowded especially towards the evening having become a favorite spot of many locals especially the younger set. It has become so popular in fact, that the owners will soon be opening up another  location on the Lower East side of Manhattan in a couple of months, The place is probably indicative of the new wave of upscale places that are starting to dot the neighborhood, especially as our Chinatown becomes a more settled and permanent a fixture of Brooklyn. The nicely extravagant interior decoration reminds one of an eatery on a starship.

Best Dumpling Place, Great Taste Dumpling

Great Taste Dumpling, formerly known as Prosperity Dumpling serves the best dumplings in Sunset Park. Their fried dumplings are five for a dollar (other places give you 4). For a couple of bucks you can have a hearty and filling meal and they taste great as well. Try their stir noodles as well. A plate for a mere $1.75 and you can't go wrong. They have an excelent menu and one of the few  ATM's that dispenses $10 bills. It's on the corner of 44th and 8th and the place is always busy.

Store of the day: Number One Ice Cream

The owner had a love of ice cream and decided to open an ice cream parlor. It's as close as you're going to get to an Italian Gelateria in this neighborhood.  They're located at the southern edge of the neighborhood at 8th Avenue between 64 and 65th streets.
