Huffington Post Does Dumplings in Sunset Park

One of the food blogs on the Huffignton post did a write up of some of the local dumpling eateries with pretty decent reviews. The article is worth a read. Often times people live in a neighborhood and only venture within a six or seven block radius of where they live and and unless someone points them to something new in the neighborhood they don't take notice of the changes and goings on around them. The article covers 6 dumpling places. I know two of them very well since I go there often and it's a cheap eat. My favorite dumpling place is Great Taste Dumpling since I live only a couple of blocks from there and was even recently reviewed by Robert Siestema. They have a vinaigrette soy sauce which I prefer with my dumplings and it's convenient. If you're there try the Stir Noodles which are made from noodles using semolina flour. I always think of them as Fettuccine Chinese style. It's very rare to see semolina noodles in a Chinese place. They have a full menu as well so you can also get standard fare and other dishes unlike some of the other dumpling places..

If you want to get a clue where the best food in an area is, watch where the cops eat. For dumpling that would be Kai Feng Fu Dumpling. I haven't been there of late since Great Taste opened nearby but if it's convenient for you to go there by all means try them. The article mentions that Hob Bo Kitchen serves fried shrimp dumplings. I guess I will have to trek up to 58th street and give them a try sometime soon before I forget. Sunset Park has been getting a lot of attention in the food area and not just Chinese cuisine. Photos of the day: Fei Long Food Court

If you haven't been to the Food Court in Fei Long Market on 8th Avenue and 63rd Street you definitely need to take a visit. Thee food court is located in the center of a Hong Kong style mall. An expansion of the huge Chinese supermarket the makes up the major part of the complex. The food court features Chinese style fast food of all types. It's a cheaper alternative to all the restaurants in the are in New York's largest Chinatown..

Best Dumpling Place, Great Taste Dumpling

Great Taste Dumpling, formerly known as Prosperity Dumpling serves the best dumplings in Sunset Park. Their fried dumplings are five for a dollar (other places give you 4). For a couple of bucks you can have a hearty and filling meal and they taste great as well. Try their stir noodles as well. A plate for a mere $1.75 and you can't go wrong. They have an excelent menu and one of the few  ATM's that dispenses $10 bills. It's on the corner of 44th and 8th and the place is always busy.

Closings: King Star Restaurant

Accross the street from Hong Kong Supermarket it appears that King Star Restaurant has closed it's doors. It appears that the building will undergo some major renovations according to the permits pasted on the wood boards. What made the place distinctive besides it's sea food and dim sung cuisine was the two Chinese style lions at the entrance. It has undergone a number of changes and ownership over the years. For quite some time it was called Jade Plaza and then eventually changed to the short lived Diamond on 8th and finally King Star Restaurant. In all of it's different resurrections it got fairly decent reviews. Time will tell if the restaurant name will remain the same or whether it has changed owners yet again. It's difficult in this economy for restaurants as people cut back and more frequently find eating at home a lot cheaper. Hopefully the economy will improve even if all signs seem to indicate otherwise.

Store of the Day: Hong Kong Supermarket

When Hong Kong Supermarket first opened I think about ten years ago on the corner of 61 street and 8th Avenue it was the only one on the East Coast for the young and expanding Hong Kong supermarket chain based in Los Angeles, California. Now there are four other  locations in New York City and the supermarket chain still keeps on growing at a fast pace. The sign on this location are a bit faded, some of the letters don't light up at night. I expect at some point they will either fix it or renovate it. I remember the first time I went inside and the novelty of the fact that very few goods it carried were American. It is still a kind of cultural experience going in there and I still occasionally go n there and try out some new product once I find out what is in the box. It's a great place to get ginseng, green tea or royal jelly at a discount. The amazing thing for us non Chinese is that sometimes we feel like tourists in our own neighborhood. But that's OK. Drop them a visit if you haven't been inside.

Store fo the day: Red Apple Fast Food

Buffet style food is not my idea of fast food. Red Apple Fast Food has a sign that sticks out in the middle of the block. I suppose it's the red and dayglow green sign that they hoisted. It does catch the eye. I didn't get a chance to step inside as I was on my way somewhere. Maybe a reader can post a review of the place and let us know if there is anything edible by western standards besides chicken feet and other unmentionables that one finds in some of these places that cater to a strictly chinese crowd. They're located on 8th between 48 and 49th streets.

Store of the Day: Jia Xiang Bakery and coffee Shop

This new bakery has replaced an ice cream parlor that used to be on this corner on 44th street and 8th Avenue. They have a brand new awning though they have been at the location for over a year since they acquired it from the ice cream parlor. It won't be long before the pigeons and the elements attack the awning, so enjoy it while it lasts. BTW they serve tea too and I believe including bubble tea and the usual chinese baked goodies.

Eatery of the day: Dumplings House on 53rd.

I finally got around to trying out the dumpling place on 53rd street off 8th avenue..It's much smaller inside than the other places in my last two reviews. When I was there I was thee only customer so I got a seat by the window and had my lunch. The dumplings are slightly larger than elsewhere. I found them to be just as good as the others. The sauce they serve at the table is of the vinaigrette type, so if you want just regular soy sauce you will have to ask for it. The place caters to the mostly Chinese residents of the area and none of the people there speak English. Next time you're in the area try them out...

Coming Soon: Dragon City Reastaurant Chinese Buffet

Finally it appears that Sunset Park will have a Chinese Buffet place. This new place is close to opening with no definite date set yet. Located near the corner of 58th street and 5th Avenue it's set to cater to a growing population of Chinese that are moving westward from 8th Avenue. I suspect we will be seeing more than just Chinese there. :Let's welcome these folks to the neighborhood and wish them success.

More In Search of Dumplings in Sunset Park.

Being a creature of habit sometimes has it's advantages and sometimes not. One of the more popular posts from a while back was my review of the only two dumpling places at the time.  Prosperity Dumpling has been open for just over a year. I remember making a mental not to myself that I would have to drop in there at some point and try their dumplings. I only live three blocks from the place so I really should not have had an excuse to avoid it. But life sometimes isn't a planned thing and I never got the chance to walk in there until this last week. I had read the few reviews of the place in Yelp (and BTW they have the nabe wrong) and though them intriguing. Well, I can report I was not disappointed. The dumplings were great. the place is clean and has a more restaurant look than the other two locations in the nabe. I decided to get 12 dumplings for $3 and what a full plate that was. The dumplings were not as greasy as one would expect. The soy sauce they use at the tables is a bit vinegary much the same as they use at Family Dumpling. I would have hoped that they would have a choice of soy sauce without vinegar but nevertheless I found the dumplings fresh, tasty and quite filling. I have not tried their sesame cake yet but will next time I drop in. Now I have no excuse to avoid the place. perhaps when I'm there I can recommend that they put plain soy sauce on the tables.  Oh, and BTW it's located on the corner of 44th street and 8th Avenue.

Village Voice rates 10 Best Sunset Park Restaurants

Being busy as I have been I missed the Village Voice rating of what they consider the 10 best restaurants in Sunset Park. New Belachan made the list and our Pacificana made the runner's up list. Sunset Park is becoming the place to go for Chinese and Mexican fare. The variety of eating fare that can be seen in our mall at our website is indicative of why our neighborhood is the up and coming hood to be in, even in this recession. I can only imagine what things would be if our economy was jumping. Remember that if you live in the area the only way to keep these places going is to patronize them and keep our capital in the hood. Now go out there and eat.
