Someone painted the silhouette on the intersection of 65th street and sixth Avenue where a cyclist was killed on June 28th by a Hit and Run driver. The stories were covered by both the NY Post and The Daily News

Popeyes reopening at new location

Popeyes fast food restaurant which used to be located on 64th street and 8th Avenue has almost finished construction of it's new location at 61st street and 7th Avenue. Why the move was initiated we have no clue. It probably has something to do with the skyrocketing rents in the commercial strips of the neighborhood as leases run out. We don't know when they will open at the new location but by the looks of things construction appears to be almost complete and we can assume it will be fairly soon. 

AM New York Does Sunset Park

AM New York did a writeup on the neighborhood at the end of May which I stumbled on. At least they comment on the borders and as old timers know the nabe begins at 17th street. In any case, it makes for interesting reading.

Closings: World Electronics on 8th Avenue

An institution in the nabe since 1986  abruptly closed it's doors as the end of July came. World Electronics which specialized in all types of electronics and FISHING TACKLE AND BAIT fell victim to the changing demoghraphics and economics of the neighborhood. The store catered to the East European community (mostly Polish) and old timers in the area. Just recently the New York Times had done a story on the place which included a slide show.  If you were a local area fishing afficionado  it was the only place you coulkd get bait and equipment. Located on the corner of 46th street and 8th Avenue it is just one of many non Chinese stores that is closing it's doors as our Chinatown spreads ever closer to completely dominating 8th Avenue from 65th street to 39th street. As buildings change hands the new owners raise the rents and make it imposssible for old establishments to stay afloat. That combined with a shrinking clientele that is moving out of the area makes for change which is a constant in this neighborhood. We are sorry to see them go. The owner told me he may open somewhere else. Now I will have to find out where else I can get fish bait in the area.

The Ferry is Back!

In a story tiled Rockaway Ferry To Make Additional Stop At Brooklyn's Sunset Park NY1 reports that the ferry will begin making stops at Sunset Park. Our nabe had ferry service right after 911 happened and then the subsidies ran out. You can see a video report at the site. According to the story..

"Beginning Monday, the Rockaway Ferry will be making a new stop at Brooklyn's Sunset Park.

It's part of a pilot program extending service to the 58th Street Pier, at least through Labor Day.

The announcement comes as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority plans to disrupt R train service for more than a year so that post-storm repairs can be made to the Montague Street tunnel, which connects Brooklyn to Manhattan.

That work is scheduled to begin this Friday."

The 58th street pier for those new to the nabe has an entrance right by the front gate of the old Army Terminal. How long the service will last is anybody's guess though...

CORRECTION: The Daily News reports the return is only for one month while they repair the R subway line.

Sunset Park Pizzeria does a deal (2 slices and soda $4)

M & F Pizzeria in Sunset Park is doing a special to drum up business at 2 slices and a can of soda for $4. I don't know how long the deal will last. The slices are not bad at all. Considering how inflation is eating away at the value of our  dollars it's not a bad deal at all. I also discovered that they deliver and also do curbside delivery as well. They will deliver even into Bay Ridge up to 75th street and into Park Slope. Visit their new webpage on our mall here.

10 of the best places to eat in Brooklyn (From the Guardian.UK archives)

From the Guardian.UK archives comes this little gem. I  was looking at the traffic on our main website and noticed that I was getting quite a few from here. One of our very own Sunset Park Restaurants Pacificana makes the list. I'll be looking at other links on the list to see if we get hits from other interesting websites.

Closings revisited, McGovern Weir florists.

The McGovern Wier Florist location seems still abandoned since it was closed over a year ago. Currently owned by Greenwood cemetery and the supposed location of a visitors center the City landmark stilll remains standing though in need of repairss and renovation..

Store closings ( La Sultana Restaurant )

I am sorry to have to report the closing of La Sultana Restaurant on the corner of 41st street and 8th Avenue. It fell victim to the changing demographics of the neighborhood and a greedy landlord who demanded double the rent. What usually happens when a building changes hands and the new owner sees a bonanza rather than a long term opportunity. The food was great but the neighborhood is changing as more Chinese appear at this end of 8th Avenue and have a taste for a different cuisine. Not to worry though. It will soonn open again at a new location in a more Spanish part of the neighborhood. I will keep you posted..

About.com does Sunset Park

There is a profile of the nabe I stumbled on in about.com . about one of the few things they got kind of right was the borders. They actually start at 17th street not 15th, but at least it's close. It's an interesting read. Of course our blog isn't mentioned, but that's ok. Neither is the main website which we run. Just figured I'd link it so you can read it..

Store of the Day: The Geek Shop ( Computer & Laptop Repairs )

The Geek Shop is a relatively new store on 5th Avenue near 49th street. It's run by two IT guys who are credentialed Certified Microsoft and Apple techs. One is Hispanic and his partner is Chinese so they basically have the whole area covered. Yes, they both speak English. The do not just computer repairs but Cellphones as well. If you need your iPhone done right THIS is the place. They are also CLEAR dealers, so if you need a mobile solution for internet access they can help you. They serve clients in Sunset Park, Bay Ridge and Park Slope. Many of their clients even come from other boroughs like Manhattan. Many computer shops in the nabe and the rest of the city are not credentialed so it's good to know where there is one.  By all means, tell them I sent you.

Store of the Day (Good Pizza Good Price)

M & F Pizzeria is a relatively new place that opened recently on 4th Avenue. It currently has a special of two slices for $4 and it includes soda. Currently it is the best Pizza deal in Sunset Park, so you can't go wrong. The place has a full pizzeriaa menu as you find in most pizzerias. If you are going to take advantage of the $4 deal I would hurry. Don't know how long that will last. They are located at 23rd street and 4th Avenue on the East side of the avenue. The part Real Estate agents market as Greenwood Heights. Oh, and the pizza is pretty good too....

Strolling along late at night along 8th Avenue in my nabe of Sunset Park I passed this Budhist temple that had it's doors open and the lit statue of Budha at the rear. Always carrying a camera is a good thing. You never know when you come accross something. Sunset Park, Brooklyn, New York..

Best Dumpling Place, Great Taste Dumpling

Great Taste Dumpling, formerly known as Prosperity Dumpling serves the best dumplings in Sunset Park. Their fried dumplings are five for a dollar (other places give you 4). For a couple of bucks you can have a hearty and filling meal and they taste great as well. Try their stir noodles as well. A plate for a mere $1.75 and you can't go wrong. They have an excelent menu and one of the few  ATM's that dispenses $10 bills. It's on the corner of 44th and 8th and the place is always busy.

Colorful hand carved and painted dragon at La Casa Artesanal @ 5th Avenue and 12th street. Just over the border in Park Slope. I couldn't resist the colors. It's an eclectic shop that has jewelry, furniture and household stuff from all over the world. It has a sister store on 7th Avenue called El Milagro..
