Openings: Healthy Dumpling Cafe In Sunset Park

A new food place has opened up on 8th Avenue. Healthy Dumpling Cafe is more than a dumpling place or cafe. It offers a full fledged menu of Chinese food and they deliver too. While their specialty is dumplings, either boiled, steamed or fried, you will find a full fared menu on their brand new page on our website. It is also newly refurnished and the place is set up to be more welcoming than the other dumpling places in the neighborhood with a slightly more upscale clientele in mind.  The prices are quite competitive   and the quality of the food is high. What more could you ask of a new restaurant in the neighborhood? Visit their web page on our website and check out their menu and offerings..

99 Favor Taste Restaurant, Hot Pot and More

Nestled in the middle  of the street on 61st street between 8th and 7th avenues is the relatively new Hot Spot where the locals have found a new food hangout. 99 Favor Taste opened it's doors in April 2012 but  because of it's location I had no clue they were there until I stumbled upon it. The  place offers traditional Chinese Hot Pot cuisine which has been evolving into Asian fusion Hot Pot a soup broth based cuisine and form of eating which originated in China thousands of years ago. The interior of the place is decked out a bit more upscale than most of the restaurants in the neighborhood and makes for a very pleasant eating environment to enjoy food. Besides Hot Pot they also serve what was described to me as Korean fusion BBQ. I haven't been able to find reviews of the place as yet in New York Magazine's website or the Village Voice. Their radar hasn't picked it up as yet. In my recently frequent visits the place is always crowded especially towards the evening having become a favorite spot of many locals especially the younger set. It has become so popular in fact, that the owners will soon be opening up another  location on the Lower East side of Manhattan in a couple of months, The place is probably indicative of the new wave of upscale places that are starting to dot the neighborhood, especially as our Chinatown becomes a more settled and permanent a fixture of Brooklyn. To see their menu and more pictures visit their page on our cyber mall. If you do drop in by all means tell them that we sent you there..

The nicely extravagant interior decoration reminds one of an eatery on a starship.

A Google image search turned up this shot of their opening in April 2012.

Openings: Bruce Lee Restaurant

The Chinese invasion of 5th Avenue continues. I spotted this new awning while at the washed out street fair last week. Located on the corner of 50th street the sign appears to be targeted to the areas' Hispanic population as opposed to the eateries on 8th Avenue. We wish them the best of luck and success. Hope it's not just another fast food Chinese joint offering the usual fare. We have plenty of those already.

Store of the Day: Dragon Bay Bakery

One thing that 8th avenue has a lot of is chinese style coffee shops. In many ways I think they are superior to Starbucks. However, they don't have the much needed wifi that some of us crave. These places are fast moving and it's a get in have your coffee and get out kind of place. Dragon Bay is a a chain and has at least four of these places along 8th Avenue. I am not familiar if they have any others in other chinatowns. They do have some pastries that beat anything Starbucks carries by a mile. My favorites are French Toast, the fillet of Chicken and cream coconut bread. Their coffee is not bad either. This one is located on 8th and 58th. The tables are stainless steel, but if you're thinking of hanging out there while sipping a coffee, this isn't the place. Drop in and give them a try anyway, you may like some of their stuff.

Closings: King Star Restaurant

Accross the street from Hong Kong Supermarket it appears that King Star Restaurant has closed it's doors. It appears that the building will undergo some major renovations according to the permits pasted on the wood boards. What made the place distinctive besides it's sea food and dim sung cuisine was the two Chinese style lions at the entrance. It has undergone a number of changes and ownership over the years. For quite some time it was called Jade Plaza and then eventually changed to the short lived Diamond on 8th and finally King Star Restaurant. In all of it's different resurrections it got fairly decent reviews. Time will tell if the restaurant name will remain the same or whether it has changed owners yet again. It's difficult in this economy for restaurants as people cut back and more frequently find eating at home a lot cheaper. Hopefully the economy will improve even if all signs seem to indicate otherwise.

Store fo the day: Red Apple Fast Food

Buffet style food is not my idea of fast food. Red Apple Fast Food has a sign that sticks out in the middle of the block. I suppose it's the red and dayglow green sign that they hoisted. It does catch the eye. I didn't get a chance to step inside as I was on my way somewhere. Maybe a reader can post a review of the place and let us know if there is anything edible by western standards besides chicken feet and other unmentionables that one finds in some of these places that cater to a strictly chinese crowd. They're located on 8th between 48 and 49th streets.

Coming Soon: Dragon City Reastaurant Chinese Buffet

Finally it appears that Sunset Park will have a Chinese Buffet place. This new place is close to opening with no definite date set yet. Located near the corner of 58th street and 5th Avenue it's set to cater to a growing population of Chinese that are moving westward from 8th Avenue. I suspect we will be seeing more than just Chinese there. :Let's welcome these folks to the neighborhood and wish them success.

Village Voice rates 10 Best Sunset Park Restaurants

Being busy as I have been I missed the Village Voice rating of what they consider the 10 best restaurants in Sunset Park. New Belachan made the list and our Pacificana made the runner's up list. Sunset Park is becoming the place to go for Chinese and Mexican fare. The variety of eating fare that can be seen in our mall at our website is indicative of why our neighborhood is the up and coming hood to be in, even in this recession. I can only imagine what things would be if our economy was jumping. Remember that if you live in the area the only way to keep these places going is to patronize them and keep our capital in the hood. Now go out there and eat.
